One evening after the rain, Bit the little worm climbed onto the windowsill. Inside, something was glowing.
Bit wiggled to the glowing box. On its side were tiny slits, just big enough for a little worm. Squeeze, wiggle, squeeze… Bit was inside!
Inside was a whole city! Shiny roads ran everywhere between little buildings, all softly glowing. Bit wiggled to a quiet corner, where one little road went round and round in a circle.
On the circle sat a big box called a battery, and a tiny lamp. The road was full of little glowing dots, all holding hands. Grown-ups call them electricity.
But the lamp was dark, and the dots were not moving. Bit looked closely. One little bit of the road was a bridge, and the bridge was up. The circle had a gap.
Bit pushed the bridge down. Click! Now the circle was whole. The battery gave a push, and all the dots moved together, round and round. The lamp lit up straight away. ON!
Bit followed the dots: out of the battery, through the lamp, round the corner, and back into the battery. Because they all hold hands, when one moves, they all move, like friends dancing in a ring.
Bit lifted the bridge. Click! There was a gap again. The dots could not hold hands across it, so they all stopped, and the lamp went dark. OFF.
Then Bit found another circle with a lamp. Its bridge was down, but somewhere else, the road had a little crack. Will this lamp light up?
No! The dots could not hold hands across the crack, so none of them could move, and the lamp stayed dark. A lamp only lights when the whole circle is joined.
Bit looked around. Something shiny was lying nearby: a tiny lost staple. Bit pushed it across the crack. Now the dots could hold hands across the shiny metal, all the way round, and the lamp lit up!
Bit wiggled home, happy and sleepy. That night, Bit dreamed of the glowing city, and of tiny bridges that went up and down all by themselves. Tomorrow, Bit would go back.
