Robo and the Lost Tooth

At bedtime, Mia wiggled her wobbly tooth, and out it popped! "Grandma will want to see it!" she said. But the tiny tooth slipped from her fingers, bounced on the rug, and rolled away, far under the bed. Mia peered into the dark. "I'll find it in the morning," she sighed, and climbed into bed.

When Mia was asleep, Bit and Lulu slid down from the windowsill to the floor. Under the bed it was dark and huge. A slipper stood like a mountain, and a sock made a soft cave. Far, far away, something small and white shone. "The tooth!" whispered Lulu. But it was much too far, and much too heavy for them.

At the edge of the toy box sat Robo, Mia's little toy robot, with two wheels and one claw. "Robo can fetch it!" said Bit. He pressed Robo's button. Nothing happened. Then Lulu found a little door in Robo's tummy. Inside glowed tiny lamps and a tiny golden track. "Robo has a little Glowtown inside him!" gasped Bit.

A Sparkling peeped out of Robo's little door. "Robo can't think for himself," it said. "He does just what the cards say, one card at a time, from the top." It showed them the cards. A straight arrow meant one step forward. A curved arrow meant turn left. A claw meant grab. "The cards in a row are Robo's program," said the Sparkling.

"Easy!" said Bit, and he slid in the cards quickly. Forward, forward, forward, grab. Robo whirred and rolled. One step, two steps, three steps, bonk! He bumped right into the slipper mountain. His claw closed, and he grabbed the slipper's fluffy pompom. Lulu giggled. "That's not a tooth!"

"Silly Robo," said Bit. But the Sparkling shook its head. "Robo did just what the cards said," it said kindly. Lulu looked at the cards, then at the floor. "Robo isn't silly," she said. "The cards were wrong. The tooth isn't straight ahead. We have to turn!"

This time Bit went slowly. Forward, forward, turn, forward, grab. Inside Robo, the Sparklings read each card and a little light moved down the row. Robo rolled two steps, turned, and rolled one more. His claw closed, and he grabbed a lost blue button. The tooth shone just one step away.

"One more step," said Lulu, and she slid one more forward card into the row, just before the claw. Far above, the window began to turn grey. Morning was coming! "Ready, Robo?" whispered Bit. Robo's lamps blinked, one, two, three.

Forward, forward, turn, forward, forward, grab. Robo rolled, turned, rolled, and stopped. His little claw closed gently around the tooth. "Got it!" cheered Bit. Even the Sparklings inside Robo did a happy dance.

"Now we need cards to come home," said Lulu. They laid them out together. Turn around, then the same steps back. Robo rolled the tooth all the way to the edge of the bed. There, Glitch was waiting. "I can fly it up!" she said, and she carried the tooth softly up to Mia's pillow.

In the morning, Mia opened her eyes, and there was her tooth, right by her pillow. "My tooth!" she cried. "Grandma, look!" And in the toy box, Robo sat very still, with a fluffy pompom and a blue button beside him.

That night, Bit lay in bed and thought. "Robo doesn't think. He just does the cards, one by one, from the top. And when the cards are wrong, we fix them." He smiled. The cards were tucked in Robo's drawer for next time. "But how will Robo remember them?" Bit wondered, and he fell asleep.
