Mia held her drawing for Grandma up to the laptop's tiny camera. Click! There it was, on the screen. "Off to Grandma!" said Mia, and pressed send. "Grandma lives far away," said Bit. "How can a picture get there?" "Let's go and see!" said Lulu.
Bit and Lulu wriggled down to the River of Sparks. There stood Mia's drawing, made of thousands of tiny lights! "The camera turned every little spot into a light," said a Sparkling. "Now it's a computer picture, and we can send it." "Wiggle-wow," said Bit.
"Hop on, picture!" said Bit, and he pushed it with his head. Bonk! It was too big for a boat. "So we cut it into pieces and number them," said a Sparkling. "Grandma's computer puts them back in order." Snip, snip! Six pieces, six dot tags.
Six little boats set off, one piece in each. Bit and Lulu rode in boat one, with the sun. Glitch was too big, so she stayed by the shelf. "We keep a copy of each piece," said a Sparkling, "until Grandma's computer says, got it!"
Up the Wi-Fi Tower went the boats, out of the laptop and into Mia's room! "Wheee! We're flying!" cried Bit. "This is Wi-Fi," said Lulu, holding on tight. "It carries things through the air, with no wires." Mia didn't see a thing.
In the kitchen, the microwave came on to warm Mia's milk. It hummed, and the air in the hall went wibbly-wobbly. The boats rocked up and down. Boat five tipped off its wave and drifted away into the dark. "Come back, number five!" cried Bit.
The boats slid down a long wire, on and on, over dark hills, far from home. Lulu counted. "One, two, three, four, six. Five is missing!" Bit's sprout drooped. "Grandma's picture will have a hole." They could see a little house glowing far ahead.
In the little house, Grandma sat knitting. Ping! went her computer. "Is that from Mia?" she smiled. The boats knew the way, because Grandma's computer has its own address, like a house. They floated right inside it. "Hello, Grandma!" called Bit.
Inside was a little Glowtown with its own Sparklings. They laid the pieces in a golden frame, in number order. But space five stayed empty. "I'll be piece five!" said Bit, and lay in the gap, very flat. Lulu giggled. "Grandma wants hands, not a worm!"
"Don't worry," said Grandma's Sparkling. "We just ask for it again." A little boat with a five-dot flag sailed all the way home. "They need number five!" said Glitch. The last copy on her shelf was piece five. She sent it off in a new boat.
Whoosh, in came boat five, and piece five went into its place. The picture was whole! On Grandma's screen, there was Mia's drawing, the sun, the grass, and the two of them holding hands. Grandma put her hand on her heart. "Oh, Mia. It's beautiful."
Grandma wrote back, and Bit and Lulu sailed home in her letter. "I love your picture, my darling," it said. Mia began to type back, one key at a time. Boom, boom, went the Keyboard Hills. "What happens when you press a key?" Bit wondered, and fell asleep.
