The Riddle Gates

Pitter-patter went the rain on the window. Lulu sat on the windowsill with her chin in her hands. "Mum says I can go to the park only if it's sunny and I finish my lunch," she sighed. "But look at all this rain."

Bit had an idea. "The Window in Glowtown can see tomorrow's weather!" he said. "Let's go and ask it." Lulu's eyes lit up, and the two friends slipped between the keys.

The Window was far, far away. So the Sparklings gave them a ride in a bottle-cap cart. Whoosh! Round the Golden Track they went, past the Clock Tower, faster and faster. "Wiggle-wow!" cried Bit.

Suddenly, the cart stopped. A tall gate stood across the track, with two round stones in front of it, far apart. The gate opened one sleepy eye and sang, "Two round stones, press them both, or I stay shut!"

"Easy!" said Bit, and he jumped onto one stone. The gate didn't move. He stretched and stretched to reach the other stone with his tail. Too far! He wobbled, and plop, he fell flat on his face.

Lulu giggled and flew to the other stone. "Ready? One, two, three!" They pressed their stones at the very same time. Ding! The gate yawned and swung wide open. "We needed both of us!" laughed Bit.

Further on stood another gate, with two round stones side by side. It winked and sang, "Two round stones, this one or that, either one will do!" Lulu looked at Bit. "Do we press both again?"

Bit pressed one stone. Ding! The gate opened. He hopped off, and it shut. Lulu pressed the other stone. Ding! Open again! "Either one works!" they laughed, and they played open-shut until the gate giggled too.

At last they reached the Window, where Old Byte was waiting. "Glowtown is full of tiny gates like these," she said. "They help the computer decide things. A microwave hums only if the door is shut and the button is pressed." Lulu gasped. "Mum's rule is a Both Gate! Sunny, and lunch!"

The Window's tiny lanterns twinkled, and a picture appeared, a big, round, golden sun. "Tomorrow will be sunny!" cried Bit. Lulu clapped her wings. "Sunny, yes! And I'll eat every crumb of my lunch!"

On the way home, the Either Gate opened with one ding, and Bit and Lulu pressed the two stones of the Both Gate together, one, two, three. Ding! The Sparklings giggled and pulled the cart home round the Golden Track.

The next day, the sun shone bright. Lulu ate every crumb of her lunch, and off she flew to the park, with Bit riding on her back. "Both yes," she laughed, "so the gate is open!"
