The friends came to the widest river they had ever seen. There was no bridge and no boat.
Then the water bubbled, and up came a giant white turtle. He was so big, he looked like a little island.
"Hello, travellers," said the turtle slowly. "I can carry you across." "Thank you, Grandpa Turtle!" said Wukong.
"Will you do something for me?" the turtle asked. "Ask the Buddha how long I will live." "We will!" they promised.
All the friends climbed onto his big, smooth shell. Then off he swam, slow and steady, across the shining water.
Little fish swam alongside, and birds flew overhead. Bajie dipped his toes in the cool water.
At last they reached the other side. "Goodbye, Grandpa Turtle! We won't forget!"
The friends walked on, toward the west. Wukong tied a little knot in his tail, so he would remember the promise.
That night, by the river, the frogs sang a gentle song. "Goodnight, Grandpa Turtle," whispered Wukong.
