From the windowsill, Bit and Lulu peeked into the room. A little girl called Mia sat with the laptop. On its screen was a photo of her grandma, who lived far, far away. "Goodnight, Grandma," Mia whispered, and she smiled.
Down in Glowtown, Glitch was so happy with her little lamp that she danced. She twirled right up to the Window and flapped her wings, flap, flap, WHOOSH! One row of tiny lanterns blew out, then another, then all of them.
Outside, Mia's screen went black. Grandma was gone! Mia's lip wobbled. "Oh no," she said. "My computer is broken."
Glitch hid behind her wings. "I didn't mean to," she said in a tiny voice. Bit wiggled up beside her. "Then let's light them again, together!" he said. And Lulu said, "Quick, before Mia goes to bed!"
The Window was a giant wall of tiny glass lanterns, row after row after row, more than all the stars in the sky. Bit climbed, Lulu flew, and Glitch fluttered. "Wiggle-wow," whispered Bit. "There are so many of them!"
"I know!" said Bit, and he lit every lantern he could reach, ping, ping, ping, all of them! Outside, Mia's screen turned all white. Mia rubbed her eyes. "Just white?" she said. "Where's Grandma?"
Lulu looked at the lanterns for a long time. "A picture isn't all of them on," she said slowly. "Some are on, and some are off. The picture is in which ones we light!" Glitch clapped. "Then let's make a picture Mia will love!"
They chose a heart. Lulu flew to the top lanterns, Glitch fluttered to the sides, and Bit wiggled along the bottom. On, off, off, on. Lantern by lantern, a shape began to glow.
"A heart should be red," said Glitch. Bit looked closely. Each lantern had three tiny glass bells inside, one red, one green and one blue. So they rang only the red bells, and the heart glowed warm and red.
Outside, a big red heart glowed on Mia's screen. Mia stopped sniffling. Her eyes grew wide, and then she smiled the biggest smile. "Hello, heart!" she said. "Is somebody in there?"
Old Byte came sliding up. "Well done, little ones," she said. "Now let the Window remember the rest." She tapped the wall, and thousands of lanterns blinked on and off, faster than anyone could count, until there was Grandma again, smiling.
"Goodnight, Grandma," said Mia, "and goodnight, little heart." Down in Glowtown, Glitch danced again, but very gently, far away from the Window. Bit and Lulu wiggled and crawled home. Goodnight, Mia.
