The Secret Under the Keyboard

One rainy night, Bit the little worm saw a glow coming from under the keyboard of a laptop by the window. It flickered, like it was calling him.

Bit climbed the Keyboard Hills. The keys were as tall as houses, and when the wind pushed one down, it went CLONK like thunder. Between two keys, Bit found a crack full of light, and he wiggled right in.

Below was a whole city of light! Rivers of golden sparks ran through the streets, a crystal Clock Tower ticked in the middle, and far away a giant glass sky glowed: the Window.

Tiny lights came floating up to say hello. They had little round faces and giggly voices. "We're the Sparklings!" they sang. "We hold hands and run round and round, and that's what makes Glowtown shine."

Suddenly, a light went out. Then another. And another! Over the river flew a grey moth with a naughty grin. Snap! She had bitten the River of Sparks in two. "I'm Glitch," she laughed, "and I like it dark!"

"I'll fix it!" shouted Bit. He grabbed a big leaf and pushed it into the gap. Nothing happened. He piled up pebbles. Still nothing! The Sparklings could not cross. Glowtown grew darker and darker.

A tiny Sparkling tugged Bit's tail. "We can't jump the gap," it whispered. "We have to hold hands all the way round, or none of us can move. If one hand lets go, the whole circle stops."

Bit had an idea. A brave, silly, wiggly idea. He stretched his long body right across the gap, from one side to the other. "Hold on to me!" he called.

The Sparklings grabbed on, one by one. They ran along Bit's back on tiny tickly feet and joined hands on the other side. The circle was whole again! Light rushed through every street, and Glowtown blazed bright.

Old Byte, a wise glowing snail, came sliding up with a shiny metal bridge on her back. "Thank you, little worm," she said, and laid the bridge across the gap so Bit could let go. "You found the secret of Glowtown."

High on the Clock Tower, Glitch the moth folded her wings and frowned. "Hmph," she said. "Next time, I'll steal all the shiny things." And off she fluttered into the dark.

Bit wiggled home through the Keyboard Hills, tired and happy. Behind him, Glowtown glowed softly under the keys, and the Sparklings ran round and round, holding hands. Goodnight, Glowtown.
