Glitch Steals the Shiny Things

The next evening, a little red ladybird landed on the windowsill. "I'm Lulu," she said. "I saw lights under the keyboard last night. Was that you?" "Come and see!" said Bit, and the two friends slipped between the keys.

But Glowtown was dark and quiet. All over the city, the shiny metal bridges were gone, and the Sparklings sat sadly by the gaps. "Glitch took them," sniffed a little Sparkling. "Every single one."

"Let's mend this gap first," said Bit. He laid a big green leaf across it. Then a twig. Then a shiny plastic button. Will the Sparklings get across?

No! The Sparklings bumped into the leaf, slipped off the twig, and bounced off the button. "Plastic only looks shiny," said Lulu. "It isn't real metal." The gap stayed dark.

Far away, something twinkled on the Keyboard Hills. "Look, a trail of shiny bits!" whispered Lulu. Glitch had dropped a tiny metal screw, and then another. "Let's follow them!"

The trail led to the Windmill Cliffs, where giant fans blew a warm, roaring wind. Bit held on tight to a leaf, and Lulu flew beside him. Whoosh! The wind carried them up, up, up to the very top.

At the top was a soft nest made of dust and fluff. And it was full of shiny things: bridges, screws, a coin, a key, and a silver paper clip, all piled up and glinting. In the middle sat Glitch.

Glitch hugged her treasures and looked at her feet. "It's so cold and dark up here," she said in a tiny voice. "The shiny things sparkle like stars. I just wanted my own little light."

Lulu had an idea. "The shiny bridges can make light," she said, "but only when they join a circle. Let's build you a lamp of your own!" Glitch's antennae twitched with hope.

They made a little circle with the paper clip and a tiny lamp, and joined it to a glowing spark-river. Two Sparklings ran round, holding hands, and the lamp lit up warm and gold. Glitch's face lit up too.

Glitch helped carry every bridge back to the city. One by one, the gaps were mended with shiny metal, and street by street, Glowtown began to glow again.

That night, high on the Windmill Cliffs, a little lamp glowed in a fluffy nest, and Glitch fell asleep beside it, smiling. Bit and Lulu wiggled and crawled home. Goodnight, Glowtown. Goodnight, Glitch.
